Maddie, I am in the same boat! My ex was abusive, my son withdrawn. When my son and his girlfriend broke up he started talking to an elder. Instead of therapy he starting going to the meetings! It's funny, he hated going as a kid. He won't talk to me (da'd, faded, whatever) and I just hope he snaps out of it. rose petal

How can I help my JW son?
by Maddie inhow can i help my son?.
after speaking with my son (a jw) today, i realise that he has many hurt feelings that he hasn't dealt with.
his childhood affected him more deeply than i realised because he hasn't really opened his heart like he did today.

What's reasonable to expect on a first date?
by serendipity ini've been on online dating sites for a while, have exchanged emails with over 100 guys (politely saying "thanks, but no thanks" to the vast majority) and went on dates with a few.
i'm generally disappointed in the emails these guys sent and have been disappointed in the dates.
i'm not sure if the problem is with my expectations or if there is just a lack of communications skills and courtesy among people.

Serendipity, go with your gut instinct. I've been on heaps of dates with guys from online. Remember, you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find the prince. I did, and I had given up looking! A few words of advice - just have fun, don't go looking for a prospective partner. rosepetal

Thanks to Barbera for doing this. I'm going to email all the librarians I know about this. Also, a way to help the publicity along is to hit Google and Yahoo, etc, with the title of the book. The more people request info the more google & co sends their little crawlers into webpages looking for the info. Talk it up.

Atheists, Agnostics: Do you still pray?
by Eh infor people who left, not only the organization, but also the canaanite/judaic/christian/islamic/bahai god, do you still pray?
before we left the group we (my wife and i) were questioning the bible and the existence of god.
being witnesses, we were uneducated and never heard of things like pascal's wager, but we (my wife especially) had come to a similar idea - even if the whole thing were ballocks, there was little harm in continuing.

Hi, no I never pray. I would feel a hypocrite for doing so. I don't know whether anyone is there. I prayed to escape my abusive husband, and I ended up doing it myself. Praying about it didn't give the motivation to leave, the motivation I got from elsewhere.
I don't think about God. I plan for tomorrow, I think about today. I remember the good things about the past. I enjoy life, but if I died tomorrow I wouldn't care about what happened to me.

An Interesting Tidbit
by snowbird ini'm using a public terminal at our bitty little old hometown library because i've lost my in-home connection.. the wife of the po of my old congregation works here, and she gave me the strangest look imaginable when i walked in.
right after i registered and took my place, a sweet little auxiliary pioneer came in and sat right across from me!.
i thought to myself, what in the world is going on?

"Librarians are the worst snoops imaginable" How do you figure that? Speaking as a librarian I would say, don't judge a book by it's cover! The worst snoops imaginable are postal workers. How do I know this? I used to be one. You could tell most of the time what was in the envelope - bills, letters, etc. I used to love reading the postcards! American librarians are to be applauded. They are arguing with their Government over privacy issues at the moment. Under the Patriot Act the US Govt is demanding that libraries turn over records of items that library patrons borrow. This is in violation of a number of privacy laws. In all the libraries I have worked in there is no record kept of what people borrow. As soon as the books come back in and are checked in the record is wiped. rose petal

Yes, bring some rain. I live in South East Queensland and it's supposed to be sub-tropical! We haven't had decent rain for 2 years at least. rose petal

There's quite a few dubs that work in libraries that I know of. They think of it as a very 'respectable' job for a woman! I ordered Combatting Mind Cult Control as an interlibrary loan, knowing full well the the ILL loans officer was a JW! I was so hoping that she was tempted! rose petal

Wow, big flashback moment, this topic! Yes, pantyhose for me, even in Queensland's hot summers. My ex used to wear a safari suit with short sleeves but long pants (it was the 70s). Even recently I got a shock when a friend told me that she went to church in shorts. My jaw must have hit the floor. She said to me, "well, God doesn't care what you wear". I couldn't believe it. It never inspired me enough to go, but wow. rose petal

3 months, not even a phone call about my late mother from the Dubs.....
by WingCommander inso......it has been 3 months since my mother passed away and not one, not one witness has called, stopped by, or even sent a card to me!
it hit me today.
i mean, i must have gotten like 50 sympathy cards in the mail from her worldly relatives and co-workers, as well as numerous phone calls, but not one witness has done anything!

Wingcommander, sorry for your loss. One thing that I remembered when reading your post was in Steve Hassan's book. He said that one definition of a cult is that they never have seriously ill or disabled people in a cult. You're supposed to look after the cult, the cult will never look after you. If you can't keep up, you're out. That is a sad indictment on the JW's, isn't it? rose petal

I do, because of the grandchildren. They are still young enough to express delight at the presents they get. I don't bother with the decorations, etc, because I couldn't be bothered. Coming from England, I used to have the whole Christmas dinner thing, but also it's too hot down under in December. It's bbq weather! rose petal
